According to NBI, Hamidon has been a person of interest since mid-2016 after allegedly inviting Indian nationals to visit the Philippines and recruit them to be a part of radical groups in Mindanao.
Hamido is now facing 14 counts violation of Article 138 of the Revised Penal Code or inciting rebellion or insurrection charge in violation of RA 10175 also known as Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
Who is Aizha Hamidon?
Hamidon was said to have been married to Mohammad Jaafar Maguid of the small but violent Islamic group Ansar Khalifa Philippines who was killed in January in a clash with police in Sarangani province.
“She gained international notoriety in the middle of 2016 when she successfully recruited several Indian nationals to come to the Philippines and join the radical Islamic extremist groups in Mindanao,” Aguirre said.
Mr Aguirre said Hamidon was also a close associate of Musa Cerantonio, an Australian Islamist preacher who was purportedly recruiting fighters for ISIS.
The NBI, said Hamidon was also the ex-wife of a Singaporean, Muhammad Shamin Mohammed Sidek, detained there for alleged ties to the IS group.
Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs said Hamidon and Shamin were not married. “MHA is in touch with the Philippines authorities on this latest arrest,” the ministry said.
