President Rodrigo Duterte announced during his interview with Erwin Tulfo on September 29, 2017 that he would allow the foreign companies who wanted to provide faster internet service to establish their business here in the Philippines.
According to him, he conveyed a plan to allow foreign telecommunications companies to do business in the country to provide faster and reliable internet service to the Filipino people.
He said that several Chinese and a Singaporean-based company already expressed their interest to invest in the Philippines.
Duterte warned the local telecommunication firms to improve their service to the Philippines or else he would let the foreign companies compete with them.
“The only way to improve your service is bigyan kita ng kompitensiya,” President Rodrigo Duterte said.
According to a survey, Philippines is one of the slowest internet connection in South East Asia while its neighbors already enjoying a very fast internet speed.
South Korea, Hongkong and Singapore already got an average of 18-26 mbps average internet connection while the latest reports said that the Philippines got the slowest internet speed in the world.
Filipinos are also paying the one of the most expensive internet services in the world.
Last Thursday, Duterte also admitted that he fired former Department of Information and Communications Secretary Rodolfo Salalima because of complaints because of being in favor with a ‘giant’ telecommunication company “There are many complaints so I asked someone to tell Rudy (Salalima) to resign.
Many complained to me that he appeared to be partial because he’s a former vice president of Globe. I’m not saying he’s protecting other giant telecommunications in China [or] Singapore but there’s no action [on his part],”he said.
