1. Fanny Brice

Brice left school to become a burlesque dancer and became a member of the Ziegfeld Follies. She later starred on Broadway and is known as “America’s first female comedy superstar.”

2. Lucille Ball

Lucille Ball is known around the world for starring in I Love Lucy which ran from 1951 to 1957. It was the first TV sitcom to shoot with a three camera setup with a live audience. 


3. Phyllis Diller

Diller was a wild comedian who made a name for herself by being completely off the wall in her demeanor and appearance. She was given a Guinness World Record for most laughs per minute.


4. Marilyn Miller

Marilyn Miller was part of a three woman writing crew who were the only female writers on the first season of Saturday Night Live. Miller also wrote for the Mary Tyler Moore Show. 



5. Anne Beatts

 Beatts was part of the three woman writing crew as well. Beatts also wrote for National Lampoon magazine.

6. Rosie Shuster

Rosie was the final member of the three woman writing crew. All three women paved the way for comedians like Tina Fey. 

7. Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg is known for her performance in The Color Purple and was even nominated for an Oscar. She’s also one of only 12 people who is known as an EGOT, or winner of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and a Tony award. 

8. Mitzi Shore

Mitzi Shore helped to launch the careers of many famous comedians. She helped found an improv theater called The Comedy Store which helped propel acts like  Richard Pryor, David Letterman, Jim Carrey, Jay Leno, Robin Williams, Chris Rock to stardom. She also had a female only venue and help LGBT standup nights.
