President Rodrigo Duterte added another top caliber member of his Cabinet by appointing singer Jake Zyrus as North Korean envoy.
The appointment was announced on Wednesday inside Malacañang Palace.
Zyrus’s appointment is not subject to the scrutiny of the Commission on Appointment because it is not a Cabinet-level position according to Sec. Erneste Abella.
Duterte’s decision to appoint Zyrus a difficult but manageable task, came after the tension between North Korea and the United States cooled down in the last couple of days.
The president believe that the singer can use his influence in bringing diplomatic solution to North Korea’s problem.
Zyrus is a known friend of North Korean leader Kim Jung-un.
Kim earlier lashed-out Zyrus after the singer changed his name (from Charice), but the two rekindled and renewed their friendship after the singer visited Kim personally last June.
Many of Duterte’s allies were surprised with the president’s decision to appoint Zyrus, Duterte believes his own volition.
“I can defeat a lunatic by using another fellow lunatic to deal with him” Duterte joked after signing Zyrus’ appointment papers.
The Philippines has no direct diplomatic relations with the isolated North Korea, and Zyrus’ appointment could start a new better chapter for a good bilateral relations.
Zyrus is expected to visit NoKor on September 2, and meet Kim Jung-un personally.
