BANNA, Ilocos Norte – For nearly a decade, the municipal council of Banna in Ilocos Norte has eliminated the use of paper during its sessions.

Led by Vice Mayor Carlito Abadilla II, members of the Sangguniang Bayan (Municipal Board) now read and review legislative measures on tablets, which has saved the municipality from printing voluminous documents.

By using a user-friendly app, local lawmakers can easily view every ocument and make edits, notes and comments on the same platform. The app also allows them to agree, object to and approve ordinances and resolutions online.

"For some, this may be a small step, but for the Banna government, this speaks of the town's commitment to a digitized system while enhancing environmental protection and management," Abadilla said in a statement on Monday.

Members of the council can also receive and store files on their devices to make them readily accessible during sessions and committee hearings.

Meanwhile, Ilocos Norte Vice Governor Matthew Joseph Manotoc hopes that other local government units in the province will adopt an in-house digitized system for faster and more reliable government services.

A modern data center was recently inaugurated at the provincial capitol to boost the province's digital infrastructure and connectivity. It aims to become a regional hub for cloud computing, server co-location, web hosting and other digital services. (PNA)
