JAKARTA – Jakarta has returned to normal following recent demonstrations, with residents resuming their daily routines and public transport services back in operation, Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said Tuesday.
The governor showcased this renewal of normalcy by attending the inauguration of a new building at University of Jakarta International (UNIJI) in West Jakarta.
"I want to show the public that Jakarta has returned to normal," Pramono told reporters at the event in Slipi.
The governor noted that since Monday, operators of public transport services had been instructed to resume operations, including mass rapid transit (MRT) and light rail transit (LRT) trains, Transjakarta buses, and Mikrotrans minivans.
To further encourage mobility, the Jakarta provincial government has waived fares for MRT and Transjakarta services until Sept. 8.
"Residents can now access any routes of public transport services managed by the Jakarta government, notably Transjakarta and MRT, free of charge until Sept. 8," he said.
However, Pramono acknowledged that the recent unrest had damaged various transport facilities and infrastructure, including 22 Transjakarta bus stops and one MRT station. Repair work has begun and is expected to be completed by Sept. 8.
He also highlighted that Deputy Governor Rano Karno joined residents on Monday in restoring a severely damaged Transjakarta bus stop in Senen, Central Jakarta. (Antara)
