LEGAZPI CITY – Construction has begun on a new facility worth PHP3.5 million that aims to enhance the interest, production, and participation of young farmers in Albay.
In an interview Wednesday, Lovella Guarain, spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture in Bicol (DA-5), said funds for the 100 sq. meters Young Farmers Hub of the Albay Young Farmers Organization (AYFO) Inc. is provided through the Young Farmers Challenge Program.
"The construction has already started, and currently purchasing equipment for delivery. The hub will function as a community services facility for the winners of the Young Farmers Challenge and members of AYFO who are engaged in agricultural business. It will also serve as a training venue for interested AYFO members and Albay residents. The facility is expected to be completed by January 2026," she said.
In addition to the new facility in Albay, there are existing centers that empower young farmers, including the processing facility for feed production, food preservation, and kurakding production in Camalig, Albay, as well as the Young Farmers Technology Incubation Center in Labo, Camarines Norte.
Joshua Barcelon, executive director of AYFO, Inc., said the new facility would include a training room, processing and packaging center, and showcase area for products created by association members who won the Young Farmers Challenge.
The hub will serve as a shared service facility for the production, processing, and post-harvest activities of various agricultural products.
Out of more than 2,000 youth members in the association, 52 participants of the Young Farmers Challenge who have established their businesses will directly benefit from the new hub. (PNA)
