BAGUIO CITY – The local government of La Trinidad in Benguet has relaunched a program that seeks to strengthen police-community partnership for faster resolution of conflicts without the need to resort to social media.

"Most complaints and concerns are aired via Facebook posts, which is not the appropriate platform, as we are not able to act on them immediately," Mayor Roderick Awingan said in a phone interview on Tuesday.

"Thus, by relaunching this program, people would learn to directly reach out to authorities and be vigilant of their communities."

Originally launched in 2018 through an ordinance, the "Neighborhood Watch Program" is a community-police partnership where the public directly coordinates with barangay officials and the police in combating crime and ensuring peace and order in their neighborhood.

"This is anchored on making the residents involved in crime prevention by informing the law enforcement of possible [crime] incidents," Awingan, who authored the ordinance when he was a councilor, said.

The mayor also pointed out that problems between neighbors can be settled if brought to the proper authorities and not on social media platforms, which he said could sometimes only aggravate the problem.

Also part of the program is a training for residents to make them more knowledgeable about different laws and ordinances, Awingan said. (PNA)
