BATAC CITY – The city government of Batac is celebrating on Monday the 85th death anniversary of Msgr. Gregorio Aglipay, the first supreme bishop of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (Philippine Independent Church).
Sept. 1 is a special non-working holiday in Batac to commemorate Aglipay's death anniversary, by virtue of Republic Act 6701.
"Eighty-five years later, his legacy still inspires the fight for faith, freedom, and Filipino identity," said City Mayor Christian Mark Chua during a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Aglipay Shrine. Local officials and residents paid tribute to his enduring contributions to the nation's history and the spirit of independence.
For the people of Batac, Chua said Aglipay will always be remembered as a patriot, priest and revolutionary leader who played a vital role in the nation's fight for independence and in shaping a faith rooted in nationalism.
In her short speech, Ilocos Norte Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos enjoined all residents to "continue honoring his life and legacy as it serves as an inspiration for all to build a better Ilocos Norte."
Aglipay was born in Batac City on May 5, 1860, and died on Sept. 1, 1940, in Manila. He was buried in his hometown, where his shrine and museum are among the city's most visited historical landmarks. (PNA)
