1 dead, 7 hurt in Maguindanao Sur ambush; pursuit underway

COTABATO CITY – Pursuit operations are ongoing for the armed men who killed a Muslim preacher and wounded seven others in an ambush in Guindulungan, Maguindanao del Sur, on Monday night, police said Tuesday.

Capt. Giuseppe Tamayo, speaking for the Maguindanao del Sur police provincial office, said the victims were on board a passenger van from Cotabato City heading to Sultan sa Barongis, Maguindanao del Sur, when ambushed in Barangay Bagan, Guindulungan at 7:30 p.m.

Killed in the attack was Datu Masla Mamo while seven of his relatives were injured.

"The motive of the ambush is still being determined as of today (Tuesday); we have yet to speak to the survivors," Tamayo said in a radio interview.

Despite being waylaid, Tamayo said the driver still managed to drive the passenger van (MCV-4862) to Barangay Crossing Salbu, Datu Saudi Ampatuan, to seek police assistance.

Scene of the crime operations personnel recovered over 50 empty shells for various firearm calibers at the ambush site.

Police investigators are eyeing "rido" (family feud) involving victims and attackers as a possible motive behind the incident.

The Maguindanao police provincial office has sought the help of the Army's 601st Infantry Brigade in running after the perpetrators.

The ambush occurred while an election gun ban is in place in Maguindanao del Sur, one of the provinces in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), for the Oct. 13 regional parliamentary elections. (PNA)
