Five years ago, Jillian and Jarod Johnson had their son Landon but lost him after a few days after being born. Despite this baby being born healthy, Landon was starved to death and died of dehydration.
The couple’s son weighed a healthy 3.3kg at birth but was put under medication because of the emergency c-section. Jilian was told doctors to exclusively breastfed Landon since it was the best for him.
She explains: “Unless you’d had a breast augmentation or cancer or some serious medical reason as to why you couldn’t breastfeed, your baby would not be given formula unless a prescription was written by the pediatrician.”
But Jilian noticed that her son would suckle on her breast for
hours and still cries most of the time.
hours and still cries most of the time.
Jillian said: “When I asked them (nurses) why he was always on my breast, I was told it was because he was ‘cluster feeding’.
On Landon’s third day, they were discharged and were finally allowed to go home and was given no instruction to supplement her breastfeeding with formula.
Barely 12 hours later, their son would go into cardiac arrest caused by dehydration. Landon died after 15 days of being on life support, where he was found to have suffered “wide-spread brain injury” due to low blood pressure from dehydration and cardiac arrest.
Jillian had no idea that Landon was starving because she wasn’t producing enough milk. Wrote Jillian: “The best advice I was given by one of his NICU doctors while he was on life support is sure breast is best, but follow with the bottle.
“This way you know your baby has eaten enough….if only I could go back in time.”
“We hope that by spreading the knowledge we’ve learned that we can help prevent any other family from losing their child to something that is 100 per cent preventable.”
