WATCH!Japan Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, overwhelming welcomes Pres.Duterte and partner Honeylet in Imperial Palace

Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko personally met President Rodrigo Duterte and his partner Honeylet Avacena at the Tokyo Imperial Palace in Japan on Tuesday. 

For the first time President Rodrigo Duterte personally joined Japan Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko. 

According to the Imperial Household Agency, the meeting lasted for 25 minutes, and Akihito mentioned the World War II period that brought about a break in Japan and Philippines relations with more than three years of Japanese occupation in the country. 

However, the president said that the event was over, along with his gratitude for the help Japan continued to provide after the war. 


The Filipino leader promised that he would limit his mouth in his meeting with the Japanese Imperial family. 

“I suppose that I have to limit my mouth there except maybe to bring the warm greetings of the Filipino nation, a grateful nation to Japan,” Duterte told reporters before departing for Tokyo on Sunday night.

Duterte said. Last year, Duterte and the imperial couple were scheduled to meet but it was cancelled because of the death of a member of the family of Emperor Akihito. 

His Majesty the Emperor is scheduled to abdicate the Chrysanthemum Throne next year, to be succeeded by his eldest son, Crown Prince Naruhito. 

The last Japanese monarch to abdicate the throne was Emperor Kokaku in 1817.
