One of slain alleged rebels in Batangas clash a confirmed as UP student -Philippine Army

The Philippine Army confirmed on Wednesday that one of the rebels who died in the Batangas encounter was a student from the University of the Philippines (UP).

According to 2nd Infantry Division Commander Major Gen. Rhoderic Parayno,the slain alleged rebel was indentified as Josephine Santiago Lapira alias Ella Rodriguez, 22 from Marikina City.

“Yes, we received information that she was from UP (University of the Philippines). I’m just not sure which (campus),” said Police Sr. Supt. Alden Delvo, Batangas provincial director.


Lapira as Ella Rodriguez which authorities believed a name she used as her alias after joining the NPA. 

Lapera’s relatives confirmed that she was a student of University of the Philippines Manila.


Lapira was among the 15 fatalities in the encounter between government forces and NPA in Nasugbu, Batangas on Tuesday evening.

It could remembered that suspected NPA rebels attacked the members of the Nasugbu PNP that resulted to a firefight between the government forces and communists.

The first encounter happened around 8:30 pm in Sitio Pimantasan while the second encounter happened in Sitio Batulao.

Two soldiers from Air Force 730th Special Operations Wing were wounded during the encounter.

The clash happened several days after President Rodrigo Duterte signed a proclamation which cancelling all the peace talks between the CPP-NPA-NDF.

UP Manila is not yet releasing any statement on the death of one of their student who allegedly turned into a communist rebel.
