In Barangay Digkilaan, Iligan City, an image of a Virgin Mary allegedly grew out of a piece of corn. Residents are expecting a surge of visitors this coming Holy Week to view this image.
According to the caretaker of the corn, Virginia Ancho, the image grew more defined and clear during the past year. In the corn, an image of a woman with a crown and her hands together as if in prayer.
The caretaker believes that this artifact gave her grandchild a second chance in life after a head injury. The image which is called “Birhen sa Mais” or “Virgin in the Corn” was found by Catalina Barita back in 2002 while picking corn to feed her chickens. Catalina saw the image in one of the corns she found.
Catalina died in 2002 and buried her near the altar built for the artifact. Experts and the church have not yet examined the said artifact.
